JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Interventionist provides targeted or intensive reading intervention services that reflect the principles and practices of Structured Literacy to individual and small groups of students. Students typically have a primary need for decoding strand instruction (phonological awareness, phonics (including decoding and encoding), and fluency).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Screening:  The Dyslexia Interventionist will be responsible for state-mandated Dyslexia Screening at the beginning of the year; the middle of the year; and the end of the year.  The Dyslexia Interventionist will be responsible for compiling and disaggregating the data in order to know which students, at which grade levels, to target.
  • Interventions and Progress Monitoring:  The Dyslexia Interventionist will be responsible for providing evidence-based interventions (provided by Normandy Curriculum and Instruction) to students at their point of need in phonological awareness, phonics or at least 30 minutes three times a week.  The Dyslexia Interventionist will also be responsible for closely monitoring the progress that students are making, and continuing to align appropriate interventions to support the student at the point of need in foundational literacy.
  • Communication:  The Dyslexia Interventionist will be responsible for monitoring and tracking progress and performance of students on his/her caseload and reporting that information bi-weekly to the Director of Literacy/Director of Special Education.  In addition, as mandated and outlined in the state Reading Success Plan Guidance, the Dyslexia Interventionist will also be responsible for communicating regularly, through district approved forms and means, with parents and guardians regarding the progress that the child is making in reading.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with students who have reading difficulties
  • Leadership ability and experience in providing staff development in the areas of reading and dyslexia to classroom teachers is a major focus.
  • Thorough understanding of reading research and strategies Neuhaus training in teaching dyslexic students preferred (Foundations of Language and Basic Skills)
  • Specific training in teaching dyslexic students, administering and interpreting diagnostic tests preferred
  • Understand and able to explain Section 504 law/procedures, test results and information to parents and teachers is necessary
  • Ability to share expertise with peers Strong oral and written communication skill

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Teaching Experience: Minimum of 3 years of effective experience as a certified ELA or Reading teacher.
